At Förde Golf Club Glücksburg, benches and waste bins aren't just practical – they're a testament to sustainable craftsmanship. 💪 Made by the greenkeeping team from local larch wood, these handmade pieces last for decades and cost under €100 each. No theft, no waste – just timeless function and design.

👏 A true best-practice example of how golf courses can take sustainability into their own hands.

Top quality with limited water and exploding water Top quality with limited water and exploding water costs - that is the challenge for golf courses in the southwest of the USA. There are solutions, but they aren't easy and cheap. Reducing turf and implementing drought areas is one of them. Monarch Beach Golf Links near San Diego is one superb example of the transformation golf clubs have to face to be fit for the future.

It can be done without chemicals: Mallorca’s Clu It can be done without chemicals: Mallorca’s Club de Golf Alcanada has now taken up the fight against the pine processionary moth in an environmentally friendly way. With the help of renowned ornithologist Cristina Fiol from GEAN, the club has installed 30 nesting boxes on the golf course and surrounding grounds. The boxes are intended to attract two insectivorous birds to nest and breed: the Spottet Flycatcher and the Great Tit, which feeds specifically on the caterpillar of the pine processionary moth.

1️⃣ The DriTan process saves vast amounts of water in leather production and was used for Biom H5.
2️⃣ The DriTan process can be used by other manufacturers too. It is distributed as open source.
3️⃣ . The leftovers from leather production are turned into yarn, which they can then use to sew shoes or produce textiles.

Will there be a complete ban on pesticides for spo Will there be a complete ban on pesticides for sports fields in Europe or not?
This issue has been a major concern for football and golf associations for two years. Now, the ban process is at a standstill, and the EU Commission, it seems, is on the defensive. The crucial question is: do we believe in this scenario as a permanent solution and continue to use pesticides as before, or do we use the time to reposition ourselves in a new and more sustainable way? A question that should not only be asked of golf course operators but also of all those responsible for football stadiums. How will the high-performance turf of the future be maintained?

What factors control biodiversity on golf courses? What factors control biodiversity on golf courses? A team of European scientists from Norway, Sweden, Great Britain and Germany is currently investigating this question as part of the GolfLandscapes project. 40 golf clubs are involved. Over a period of three years plants and birds are monitored. More understanding about possibilities to improve biodiversity on the golf courses is the target. The project is supported by the The R&A and STERF.

⛳ On the surface, it's ‘good figures and busin ⛳ On the surface, it's ‘good figures and business as usual’. The GCSAA conference - the meeting of the turfgrass industry - shows first and foremost that the golf industry in the USA is thriving. .

❗ However, the elephant in the room at the four-day event in San Diego sits in Washington and is Donald Trump: in an industry in which a significant proportion of the low-cost greenkeeping labour force has a migrant background, the migration debate is a real issue.

And that's not all: the question of how the E.P.A as the regulatory authority for pesticides and the national and regional water authorities will act in future in a political environment in which climate change has often been dismissed as pure nonsense is essential and economically relevant. After all, the water budget of the average 18-hole course in the Southwest of the USA is between 600,000 and 1.5 million dollars.

1️⃣ Autonomous mowing: Anyone waiting for Toro, John Deere or Jacobsen to make a grand entrance was disappointed. The market is starting to grow, but the established manufacturers are clearly struggling with the topic, while curiosity about the small robotic mowers from Husqvarna and Kress is growing among golf clubs.

2️⃣ Drones are the device of the future. They are comparatively inexpensive, easy to handle, and versatile regarding data acquisition.

3️⃣ Water is irreplaceable for golf, which is why the focus is on innovatively reprocessing it, breaking it down, and making it ideal for soil and plants.

4️⃣ The pesticide industry in the US is in good spirits - I recommend a study trip to Europe 😇

5️⃣ One thing is certain: The time when impressive large machines and mowers set the tone is over. Data experts and scientists are laying the foundations for quality, and all those greenkeepers who join forces with them will become stars of the industry.

Srixon shows that there is room for improvement wh Srixon shows that there is room for improvement when it comes to the plastic consumption of balls. The new Z-Star golf balls, which use a newly developed, extremely thin urethane shell made from biomass, will be on sale from February 22. Srixon emphasizes that the more sustainable production has no impact on the performance of the ball.
The change in material marks the first time that one of the leading ball manufacturers has launched a model on the market that is at least partially produced without petroleum-based plastic.
Progress in terms of sustainable production is achieved through the use of urethane, which consists of biopolyol extracted from corn. This significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions during the manufacturing process compared to conventional petroleum-based balls.
Based on the global sales volume of the Z-Star series from 2022 to 2023, Srixon expects the use of the material to reduce CO2 emissions by around 30.7 tons. This is roughly equivalent to the CO2 emissions generated by the production of 31 million plastic bottles.

No more plastic: from November 2026, the British t No more plastic: from November 2026, the British turfgrass industry will be using significantly less plastic netting, which provides stability for turf. Following an extensive survey of its members, the Turfgrass Growers Association (TGA), has banned the use of plastic netting in turf production by its members. From October 31, 2026, members will no longer be permitted to use plastic netting in turf production if they wish to retain their membership of the association in the 2026/27 subscription year and beyond.
Despite industry efforts to develop alternatives, there are currently no proven, cost-effective, biodegradable netting solutions that meet the practical and economic needs of turf production. Continued research is essential to find a solution.

⛳ Which courses do we want to play in 2025? Blo ⛳ Which courses do we want to play in 2025? Bloomberg News published these days an article about what are - supposedly - the 10 most exciting new Hashtag golf courses to play 2025. They range from Washington D.C. to South Carolina, Florida to Texas, Saudi Arabia to Scotland.
💡 We love exciting #golfcourses - but we hate that the presentation of ten new #golf courses doesn't even mention the word #sustainability. Maybe one or another of the owners or designers of the courses took this into account when building, selecting the terrain, and designing the golf holes? However, the decisive factor is that most golf course reviews generally mention exciting views, great golf holes, green fees and marketing opportunities.
⛳ What kind of golf courses do we want to play in 2025? The ones with the highest green fee, the most spectacular shot over the cliffs, the closest proximity to Augusta National or perhaps the ones where we feel that the overall concept delivers a great golf course, fits into nature, into the community, into the future?

This is enough for us to talk to Superintendent Doug Warner from East Hampton Golf Club and Jennifer Morris from Westlake Golf and Country Club, both members of the @GCSAA, about their measures for future-orientated water management. One thing becomes apparent in the conversation with Elliott Dowling from the United States Golf Association (USGA): the issue of water in many parts of America is a major concern for greenkeepers. Much more than many golfers probably realize. Link for the whole story in bio.
