US Kids Venice Open focuses on plastic avoidance
Small details make the difference: With this specification, the organizers of the US Kids Venice Open in Italy have been trying to bring the sustainability factor into play at the tournament for children and young people since 2018, which is why the British GEO Foundation certified the tournament in 2018 as the first amateur tournament.
This year, the organizers, the US Kids Foundation and Playgolf 54, placed particular emphasis on avoiding plastic. All participants received refillable bottles and cups as gifts. Water containers at numerous holes provided supplies. In addition, helpers sorted the plastic bottles out of the garbage, and the proceeds from the sale of the bottles went to charity.
Bamboo teas as starters also ensured that significantly fewer wooden and plastic tees were used.
And: In order to train the kids on the subject of nutrition, each dish was provided with a small information sheet listing the most important ingredients.
After choosing the Club Golf della Montecchia, certified by GEO, as the location of the tournament, there was also a small information program about the existing beehives and insect houses on the site.
Taken together, a large number of actions that turned a normal youth tournament into a sustainable children’s event. The GEO award followed immediately afterwards.
