⛳ For us, the look behind the scenes at The Wisley Golf Club was, therefore, quite interesting. How does one of the UK's leading #golf clubs position itself regarding #sustainability?
👉 Conclusion: I was pretty surprised - John Glendinning, Chief Executive, had for example already successfully dealt with the issue of a paperless office himself. Numerous projects on water, plastic and energy have been implemented.

📌 When it comes to dealing with the consequences of climate change, many golf courses have already taken measures to adapt to the challenges of the future. Far too many golf course managers, however, cling to these two patterns of behaviour.
1️⃣ They bury their heads in the sand, hoping that extreme weather and stricter regulations will somehow pass them by.
2️⃣ They react to emergencies at short notice, which usually leads to higher costs, often course closures and uncoordinated construction sites, as well as member dissatisfaction as a result.

⛳ Golf courses are not to be treated much differently than cities: with the right measures, they can prepare for heavy rain, drought or storms in most cases.

🏌‍♀️ How nice that Ping Europe Limited, one of the leading club manufacturers, is now switching to renewable energies in Europe. 250.000 Kwh per year will be produced with solar panels on the roof. Ping Europe becomes 41,5 % self-sufficient in terms of energy use.
🙂 Who knows, maybe they will increase - the positive news about the environmentally friendly production of balls and clubs.

The consequences of #climate change and the limitation of #resources are still underestimated by #golf facilities worldwide. The speed at which the environment changes and the economic threat this poses to many golf courses is sometimes not recognized. Therefore, the leading golf associations' clear emphasis on the need for #sustainable #agronomy is significant.
However, it is also crucial that not only the financially robust golf facilities but also all average clubs with limited human and financial resources have access to the necessary expertise.
The R&A today announced its expanded Sustainable Agronomy Service as inclusive, affordable and accessible.
Let's hope that the programme's persuasive power is significant enough to convince all those who still think they can sit out the challenges of climate change.

🤔 But when you take a second look, you realize there are problems.
🌳 Offsetting the carbon footprint with certificates is controversial. The research by a group of scientists around Thales A. West from the University of Amsterdam shows that the effectiveness of REDD+ projects, which are supposed to mitigate climate change by protecting forests, is pretty dubious. It will be interesting to see if further studies on other forms of compensation will follow and what results they will yield.
🚗 🛩 To be honest, given all these travel activities of golfers and fans at tournaments, all these car journeys of the regular golfer to his club, net zero in golf seems impossible at the moment without compensation with certificates.

👧 Environmental education on the #golf course is a way to turn children and young people into ambassadors for environmental protection and also for golf.

💡 According to the representative study, “Future? Youth ask! – 2021”, which the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUV) commissioned surveyed more than 1,000 young people aged 14 to 22, this area of life is one of the four most important issues for young people in Germany. 85 % of the young people surveyed think environmental and climate protection is essential.
