5 simple tips for more sustainability at the golf club
Becoming more sustainable as a club does not mean being perfect. Rather, for the vast majority of golf courses, it is about taking the first steps in the broad spectrum of topics. Generally speaking, small projects are better than no attempt to make club management and club life more sustainable. Here are five projects for 2025 that are easy to implement, cost little to nothing and cover key sustainability segments in golf: Install at least one water dispenser near the clubhouse. This way, you ensure that the number of plastic or glass bottles is reduced. Even if these are recyclable, it is still more environmentally friendly if you encourage your members and guests to bring refillable bottles. In addition, the water station is perceived very positively as a service wherever it is already in use.

News & trends about sustainability in golf
Contact a local environmental protection organization. They can certainly support the club with specialist knowledge on the subject of nesting boxes, removing invasive species or mowing rough. This often results in the possibility of monitoring animal or plant species.
No printout of results lists
Golf secretaries still sometimes print out several results lists before the award ceremony so that participants can view them. This is no longer in keeping with the times and is no longer necessary, as the results can easily be read on any smartphone. Reducing paper consumption contributes to a reduced CO2 footprint.
Create water inventory analysis
Saving water is a puzzle. It is made up of many pieces. It starts with optimized irrigation, storage options, changes to the surface area and much more. However, it is essential that every club has clarity about its water situation at the start of the process. How much water is used for which areas of the course? What exactly is the water permit? What type of water is used and is it possible to use gray water from the surrounding area or to save more water on the course? How efficient is the irrigation system and are the sprinklers all optimally installed and positioned on the course? Together with the head greenkeeper or irrigation technician in the team, a precise analysis should be possible, which can then be the starting point for further measures.
Appoint sustainability to the board or management
Every golf club board should have a person responsible for sustainability and who considers it in all decisions.
