👨‍🎓 What does rough maintenance on German golf courses have to do with the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg? Quite a bit, as it turned out last week, when the ECJ ruled that the Federal Republic of Germany was not sufficiently fulfilling its obligation to protect lowland meadows.

⛳ The situation is different on Germany's golf courses: Here, the issue of developing species-rich meadows has been in the spotlight for years. The best example of best practice is the Golf Club Freiburg, which has developed and now boasts several hectares of such lowland meadows in the FFH area. In the Bavarian Golf Association, experts from LBV - Landesbund für Vogel- und Naturschutz in Bayern assess the quality of meadows as part of the Bavarian Flowering Pact with the Bavarian Ministry for Environment.

🌱 Developing high-quality areas for biodiversity remains the most critical opportunity for golf to score positive points with its enormous areas outside fairways and greens. Anyone who believes that the efforts of individual clubs play no role in the big picture is mistaken.

You can see that the value of meadows has already been a case for Europe's highest court for administrative law.

Golf Sustainable is independent and has no advertising or cooperation partners from the commercial sector. This is important - because it is the only way to produce good, objective journalism.
Nevertheless, Golf Sustainable has to be financed: technical costs, our small staff, and production costs. We manage all this with the support of some golf associations and private individuals who believe in sustainability.
💡 We are now launching into the world of crowdfunding together with Fairplaid, the only and largest German service provider for crowdfunding in sport.
⛳ Our project: Golf Sustainable is creating the Vision 2050 webinar series for download and two live webinars on the basics of sustainability in golf.
They are intended to give golfers, golf clubs, managers, and other interested parties the opportunity to learn about the topic in an uncomplicated and, ideally, cost-free way.
👨‍🎓 Only knowledge makes competent decisions possible. The lower the cost and entry hurdle, the easier this will be.
🙏 We hope to realize this project with your help. The beauty of crowdfunding is that every small or large amount helps.

It was probably the worst case of flooding on a European golf course in 2024: the three courses at the Diamond Country Club in Austria were two meters underwater after a dam burst in September. Now, 22 hectares of fairways and ten greens must be resurfaced with turf to ensure top quality on the main course in April. A classic case of climate impact costs.

We all know the need for data. In golf, the main problem is that there is hardly any anonymized data on water and pesticide use. As a result, the sport can sometimes appear opaque and untrustworthy to the public and authorities.

Anyone who takes a closer look at a research paper of Michael Bekken, from NIBIO Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research and University of Wisconsin-Madison and other scientists on the pesticide risk in the USA and various European countries will find that
📍 the pesticide risk was exceptionally high in the USA
📍 the willingness to provide transparent data was far lower than in other regions of Europe.

What is the golf industry's future vision? Transparency and reducing pesticide use are positive options. The research paper shows they are already being implemented in parts of Europe, especially Denmark.

The question remains: How do we get the whole industry on board?

Who is our main enemy?
This is a question sometimes asked by greenkeepers, board members or golfers.
Golf doesn't have enemies, but it is surrounded by other stakeholders who may set rules, install laws, have demands, or have different opinions. Stakeholder management is a daily business in every successful company.
It is important to remember two facts:
1. Golf is always in the minority because even in countries like the USA, about 90 % of the population doesn't play golf.
2. No golf club is an island, self-determined and free to do whatever it wants.
Conclusion: This is the time of collaboration. Don't talk about enemies, but potential partners.

On the other hand, golf clubs in historical parks have to take care of the sometimes more than 100-year-old giants. It's not an easy task, but a very sensible one. How often do golfers think about divots?
Three days ago, I happened to walk past this pile of old divots—waiting here for their future as compost. They had withered away after hundreds of golfers apparently decided not to put them back.
Wasted, the chance that they might grow back. How nice for the next golfer whose ball lands in this very divot. 😂
Divots are a #quality issue. Anyone who inspects the landing zone of drives after a professional tournament will recognize a zone of holes. Anyone who visits one of the famous British links courses, where around 40,000 rounds are played in eight months, will see the same thing.
The consequence: constant divot management by the greenkeeping team to maintain quality. That costs time, money and resources.

How much of this does the normal golfer know? Probably not enough. I needed this impressive pile of old divots to think more about it.....
