An important day for the golfing world, which will largely go unnoticed because research rarely has a big stage. Yesterday, the ITRI International Turfgrass Research Initiative, launched by STERF, USGA and R&A, officially kicked off with the first three projects on existential issues in golf:

Why are these research topics existential?
1️⃣ Clean Water is globally a shrinking resource. Golf courses have to reduce their consumption - and can reduce costs. There is no outdoor golf without water.
2️⃣ If you want to keep golf a healthy sport, you have to combat dollar spot permanently without using fungicides or using only the absolute minimum. Those who lose the battle against dollar spot lose customers, members and market acceptance. Economic problems arise.
3️⃣ CO2 emissions are harmful to humanity, cause climate change, and thus create problems for golf. However, the question of how high the CO2 emissions of a golf course and its operation are cannot be answered because there is no standard calculation formula. The golf industry is unable to speak on CO2. This damages its image. A poor image is never good for business.

Golf journeys are wonderful - plan them in a conscious way

1. “Staycation”: Consider regional alternatives. The carbon footprint is drastically reduced if the journey is short. For long-distance destinations transportation often accounts for over 70%.

2. Rail instead of road or flight: Travelling by train and bus with large golf luggage is a hassle. However, many golf resorts now offer first-class rental clubs so that you can travel light. If you prefer to travel by car, the electric version is a good option. And if you’re not alone in the car, but have a passenger, you’re setting a positive example.

3. Rethinking luxury: The type of accommodation has a massive impact. An overnight stay in a 5-star hotel with a large spa generates CO2 emissions that can be up to six times higher than those of an overnight stay in a vacation apartment.

4, If flying, then without detours: If a flight is unavoidable, consistently book direct flights. A large proportion of emissions is generated during take-off and landing.

5. Effectively offsetting emissions. Offsetting is an important intermediate step in offsetting unavoidable emissions. Almost all flight providers now offer flight offsetting, as do many tour operators.

6, Choose sustainably certified resorts: When booking, look for certifications and the resort’s commitment.

7. Optimising mobility on site: Rental cars (gasoline) make up between 2% and 15% of the balance on site. Check whether the resort offers shuttle services.

8. Acting consciously on site: You can also cut a good ecological figure on vacation if you opt for a plant-based diet or fill your own bottle with water instead of using disposable plastic bottles on site. But your footprint also depends on how you move around the golf course. Walking is the responsible – and healthy – alternative to using a cart.

9. No short trips by plane: Travel longer and less.

10. Create awareness: Perfection is not the goal, but talking about conscious decisions is changing the industry. Those who talk about their vacation decisions become role models and create imitators.

Where do we stand on sustainability in golf at the end of the year?

🙁 The bad news:
1️⃣ Although the golf industry in the USA, as the leading market, is rushing from one economic success to the next, water shortages and violent storms are pressing concerns.
2️⃣ Given that facts and scientific research on climate change are increasingly unwelcome in the USA, it is becoming increasingly complex to have an open discussion about the effects of climate change on outdoor sports.
3️⃣ The association of golf with a polarising political agenda, especially under U.S. President Donald Trump, has significantly damaged golf's image.
4️⃣ The question of the appropriateness of Aramco and the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund PIF's intensive sponsorship of golf has been reignited by Saudi Arabia's blocking of new binding phase-out dates for fossil fuels at COP 30 and watering down production limits in the UN plastics agreement.
5️⃣ Extreme weather caused noticeable instability on the professional tours.

🙂 The good news
1️⃣ Numerous golf associations are aware of the urgency of sustainability and are driving forward issues such as data collection, pesticide minimization and CO2 reduction.
2️⃣ Large national collaborations between nature conservation associations are increasingly forming.
3️⃣ Scientific research, driven by STERF together with the R&A, the USA and various universities, has gained more visibility.
4️⃣ On the events side, there were clear efforts in 2025 by the DP World Tour, the LIV Golf and The Open to become more sustainable. The WM Phoenix Open once again set an example as a zero-waste event.

😁 What makes us optimistic for 2026?
1️⃣ The Solheim Cup in Bernardus is planned to be a particularly sustainable event.
2️⃣ The role of a sustainability coordinator in a golf club is becoming essential.
3️⃣ Nature still offers golf many opportunities for positive development.
4️⃣ The number of projects undertaken by individual clubs, committed managers, business leaders, greenkeepers and golfers to build a sustainable future for golf is enormous.

How do you combine US golf course design, strict Danish environmental regulations and high quality? We visited The Scandinavian Golf Club to show you how it works.

The Old and New Course, designed by the design company Robert Trent Jones Junior II, combine two defining: water and woodland. What looks like pure aesthetics is in fact a sophisticated, self-sufficient water management system – collecting, storing and reusing drainage water to face hotter, drier summers.

Here, fairways don’t have to be emerald green all year round. They reflect the weather, the climate – and a conscious decision to prioritize nature, biodiversity and long-term quality over appearances.

The award-winning clubhouse is a binding element between the US-style golf courses and the Danish landscape.

A powerful example of how world-class golf and environmental responsibility can thrive together.

Can golfers contribute to academic research? The answer is a resounding YES.

At Golf Sustainable, we often talk about the theory of sustainability, but today we are discussing the practical transfer of this knowledge to the individual golfer. Through the German"GolfBiodivers" project, the gap between the university lecture hall and the fairway is being bridged by the tool Citizen Science.

The Collaboration: Science Meets Passion led by Anna Klopstock from the University of Freiburg, this project didn’t just leave the research to the scientists. Instead, it empowered golfers and greenkeepers to become researchers themselves.

The Theory: University experts design monitoring protocols for wild bees and wasps.

The Transfer: In clubs like Golf- und Landclub Coesfeld or Fürstliches Golf-Resort Bad Waldsee, individuals took ownership. They monitored nesting aids, used apps to identify species, and documented nature.

The Impact on the Individual: Take Oliver Brambrink (Coesfeld) or Klaus Schneiderhahn (Bad Waldsee), for example. Their engagement went beyond maintaining the turf; it deepened their understanding of the ecosystem they play in. Verena Ettig-Röhrl from Golfclub Hochstatt highlights how this knowledge spreads—turning golfers into communicators for nature.

The Result? Real data. The monitoring revealed an increase in species like the aphid wasp (Blattlaus-Wespe) and higher occupancy in nesting boxes compared to previous years. This proves that when science guides the way, golfers can actively protect and enhance biodiversity.
