A conscious decision was made not to undertake any major construction work on this stretch of coast, instead relying on the natural power of plants. <strong>Dr. Clare Maynard<\/strong> from <strong>St. Andrews University<\/strong> and project manager of the <strong>Green Shores<\/strong> initiative, which is concerned with the restoration of marshes, describes the advantage as follows: &#8220;Marshes in salt water absorb energy.&#8221; Examination of relevant areas at St Andrews found that &#8220;the terrain behind the marshland was in fairly good condition and suffered far less from erosion and flooding than areas with no frontal marshland.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div hcb-fetch-image-from=\"https:\/\/golfsustainable.com\/en\/christmas-tree-recycling-also-protects-british-open-course\/\" class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ump5WBAvhl\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/golfsustainable.com\/en\/christmas-tree-recycling-also-protects-british-open-course\/\">Christmas tree recycling also protects British Open course<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Christmas tree recycling also protects British Open course&#8221; &#8212; Golf Sustainable\" src=\"https:\/\/golfsustainable.com\/en\/christmas-tree-recycling-also-protects-british-open-course\/embed\/#?secret=zt5mPXsebW#?secret=ump5WBAvhl\" data-secret=\"ump5WBAvhl\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Since 2018, small plants suitable for saltwater marshland have been planted in the gaps in the marshland in front of the Struie course. The work was done by students from Dornoch, volunteers and the Royal Dornoch greenkeeping team. It is still unclear to what extent the plants will really act as breakwaters in the long term, but Maynard is convinced of the concept: \u201cApproaches like this, which work with nature, are now recognized as an important addition to classic building variants.
