And this despite the fact that the initial requirements are anything but easy. All hell broke loose in Boston this week. The basketball NBA Finals are coming up, the Boston Red Sox are playing baseball at home, and then there&#8217;s the US Open. Expected spectators: Over 200,000. &#8220;There&#8217;s no question mobility is one of our biggest challenges, but we&#8217;ve decided to host the most sustainable US Open yet,&#8221; said <strong>Janeen Driscoll, director of brand communications for the United States Golf Association<\/strong> . The USGA, as the organizer of the major tournament, has teamed up with the MBTA as the provider of the local public utility and is now aggressively promoting bike sharing, trains and buses. &#8220;It helps that Boston is already a city where sustainability plays a big role.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The start of a great learning process<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The US Open is known in golfing circles for many things: the toughest game conditions in golf, the fastest greens, the highest rough, the loudest fans and countless beer mugs lying next to the wastebaskets. The USGA would like to add another picture to this: that of the US Open working on their carbon footprint, trying to go a more sustainable path. \u201cWe know we still have a lot to learn, but we want to get started,\u201d notes Driscoll.<\/p>\n<div hcb-fetch-image-from=\"https:\/\/golfsustainable.com\/nachhaltigkeits-check-porsche-european-open\/\" class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Pt9ydfyOdP\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/golfsustainable.com\/en\/sustainability-check-porsche-european-open\/\">Nachhaltigkeits-Check: Porsche European Open<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Nachhaltigkeits-Check: Porsche European Open&#8221; &#8212; Golf Sustainable\" src=\"https:\/\/golfsustainable.com\/en\/sustainability-check-porsche-european-open\/embed\/#?secret=oGfRSxBzUF#?secret=Pt9ydfyOdP\" data-secret=\"Pt9ydfyOdP\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The approaches are there: In addition to the attempt to dissuade golf fans from driving individually to the golf course, there are various other projects pending:<\/p>\n<p>The CO\u2082 balance is determined by a service provider in order to get a starting point for further reducing emissions. &#8220;We need a foundation,&#8221; says Driscoll. It will now be created in 2022.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The number of <strong>diesel generators<\/strong> has been reduced by installing more open spaces instead of tents with air conditioning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ticketing<\/strong> and all information is digital to avoid paper waste.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>lighting sources<\/strong> have been replaced, parts of which are powered by solar power.<\/li>\n<li>More than 500,000 <strong>plastic cups<\/strong> were exchanged for aluminum cups so that fans can take them home.<\/li>\n<li>The USGA buys <strong>Renewable Energy Credits<\/strong> to reduce the remaining carbon footprint.<\/li>\n<li>As part of the City of Brookline&#8217;s <strong>Urban Forest Climate Resiliency Master Plan<\/strong> , 122 large trees will be planted in the City of Brookline after it marks the 122nd US Open trades.<\/li>\n<li>Proceeds from the US Open will be used to restore the City of Brookline&#8217;s <strong>Lost Pond Trail<\/strong> . The nature trail has overgrown and eroded and is now of little use to Brookline residents.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Robert T. Lynch Municipal Golf Course<\/strong> , owned by the City of Brookline, is getting an environmental upgrade through an environmental project on an offset area.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>To what extent, despite all the media hype surrounding the LIV Golf series and Phil Mickelson, some attention is left for the USGA&#8217;s efforts is the big question.
